Discussion Topic: Why did you join? Why do you remain?
This is simply a discussion of the question we all ask, for the sake of our membership, and more broadly, the organization: What exactly do we want (or envision) out of the organization.
It’s design is for your comments below. And this article content itself will be short, in respect of that importance.
If you’ve not yet registered here to be able to comment, instructions are here at the How to Register post.
So, why did you join? Why do you remain? What things did you get (or hope to get) out of the membership? –And, for broader discussion, on the presumption that these things are universally shared as values, where would you like to see the organization go?
I had an interesting conversation with Andrea recently, who postulated that people don’t come to Mensa because of any sparkling feature, but because they feel they are fringe. This struck a chord with me. I am verbal, and a thinker. And my entire circle of friends — if they would listen at all — didn’t understand me, or my conversation. Either they wouldn’t understand, or wouldn’t allow the time to formulate or expound on a thought. So, I joined to *hope to* find a group of friends for “normal conversation”.
Have I found that here? No, not really — well, not entirely at least; though people do understand. What would I like to see? More opportunity for the type of conversation with Andrea, above. Just to converse. Not necessarily for program this or that; simply for the creation of opportunity for conversation.
I also add, since I am the creator of this blog entry, that the goal of this discussion is to empower a more vibrant organization, by allowing people to express what they want, and hopefully in the process, allow the Program Creators to create such a thing. It’s been said, you can’t push a rope. And while we have a ton of programs and events, I would like to see an environment — this environment — where people can give this input, and become creators themselves.
